The use of camera for traffic data collection has been widely recognised as the most accurate method because it promotes transparency while ensuring data integrity where data can be crossed check with manual count. Video Recording Unit (VRU) is a standalone camera system which can record video footages at megapixels resolution. It is a safe, non-intrusive system which does not damage the roads and lamp poles. It can be used as a temporary setup using its built-in battery or can be setup as a permanent system when connected to a solar system or a lamp pole electrical power supply. VRU is the first Malaysian-made camera system designed specifically to be used in traffic data collection and have been used in many important projects in Malaysia including the annual Road Traffic Volume Malaysia by the Bahagian Perancang Jalan, Kementerian Kerja Raya, Malaysia. There are more than 100 VRUs available to be deployed using skylifts and telescopic masts.
